Click on my name to see some Mini Coopers caught by Google Street View!

Regarding price, Coopers are pretty expensive in the UK - around £13,000 or about $21-22,000 US at today's exchange.

For 20 grand I got me a full-size pick-up with an 8-foot-long bed. Plopped a camper shell (topper and other terms used elsewhere) atop the bed and I am ready for whatever financial calamity awaits.

No Hooverville for me, buckaroos and buckarettes, if financial calamity occurs I have a place to live that will keep the rain and snow and wind and bugs off my decrepit carcass.

A couple hundred bucks of camping-type porta-potty, a propane stove, and a few other goodies and I can hunker down to await better days.

Of course, I am a single old coot who can rough it. Families and today's wimpy overly-civilized bleating sheep citizenry would likely be appalled at the thought of using a truck as a home.

Beats Hooverville, though.... or attempting the same in a Mini or any standard car.

[...] Sounds awesome, right? Just two problems. First, the deadline for submitting receipts is December 31, 2006. Second, my MINI Cooper gets approximately 60 bazillion miles per gallon, so $100 of gas by December 31st would be tough to pull off. I could just pick up receipts off the ground at the gas station or steal them from my neighbors’ trash cans, but both of those would be morally and ethically wrong. And one of them would be legally wrong, too. (In Maryland, you’re not allowed to pick trash up off the ground. We’re pro-littering.) [...]

[...] May was a financially boring month with one pretty big exception: I decided to pay off the loan on my MINI Cooper. Why would I do such a thing when my savings currently earn more interest than I pay on the car loan? Eh, I was bored. [...]

[...] Drive a vehicle that’s safe for all. Sure you can cart you and your family around in a Hummer or monstrous SUV and you’ll absolutely plow through any passenger car that runs a red light in front of you. But if you’re at fault for that accident, you could see your financial future plowed through instead. So instead of driving down the road in eight tons of metal, look into a more sensible mid-sized car or light SUV instead. There are several such vehicles with high government safety ratings (*cough*MINI*cough*). [...]

We should just have a better and more extensive train system, as well as a more reliable bus system. (the buses in SD are often 30 min late)
