I admit that one reason I didn’t ride the bus for the first 6 years of living in this area is that driving is just so much easier. However, now that I have a job in downtown DC, I don’t drive because
1) the cost of gas to drive there and back
2) wear and tear to drive there and back
3) about $20 per day to park there

I spend $7.40 per day to ride to and from work, and $4 more if I want to drive to the metro, which I rarely do. However, walking a mile in 100 degree weather has become unbearable, but that’s where I get my wife to drive me

I think in long-term your thinking is sound. But in the short-term, and speaking specifically about NYC, the public transportation is already so overloaded. Making it free will probably make it very dangerous — i.e., overcrowded platform, people pushing each other at bus stop, etc.

However, I do want our gov to be more creative (like you). I am all for the greener world.
