Staying Cool During A Summer Power Outage

first you get the battery, then you get the powa

We just lost power here at Punny Money Headquarters, and since my laptop only has half a charge left, I better type quickly. Should you find yourself without power during this hot summer season, here are a few tips to help you stay cool while the lights are out.

  • Drink a lot of water. The Center For Disease Control and Prevention recommends you drink a glass of fluids every 15 to 20 minutes during a power outage on a hot summer day.
  • Dress appropriately. I just kicked this one up a notch. That’s right, folks; I’m blogging naked!
  • Take a cold shower. Hop in the shower every couple of hours for an instant cool-off.
  • Cover south-facing windows. That’s where you’ll get most of the heat entering your house. Draw the blinds or close the curtains to help keep the inside of your house a little cooler.
  • Go somewhere cool. Hop in your car and listen to the radio for news of how widespread the outage is. Then drive outside the affected area and find an air-conditioned public area like a museum, indoor shopping mall, or library. If you have an answering machine hooked into your home phone, you can call from your cell phone while away to see if the power’s back on; remember, the answering machine needs power to catch calls.

Please feel free to share your tips for keeping frosting during summer power outages by commenting here or sending them to Punny Money.

Now to wait for the power to return so I can post this…

When I used to walk home from school, I’d eat a popsicle or two to cool down instead of turning on the AC like my dad and sister do. It cools you down faster than AC (not sure about the cost difference, but sometimes I would just make my own popsicles, so maybe that helped)

If it’s really hot, you can:

- Use your small battery powered fan.
- Mist yourself with water from a spray-bottle.
- Fan yourself with one of those paper fans you see in southern churches.
- Sit on the porch in a breeze.
- Drink refrigerator water (water that’s been placed in the fridge for a while, and is cold.)
- Draw a cool bath.
- Combine all above.

Obviously, it’s better to be prepared. I live in a house without a/c, and we have occasional blackouts.

Another tip: get in the routine of doing your most energy-sapping work in the early morning / evening. If possible a siesta in the afternoon will really do you good (I know that’s always possible for 9-5ers). There’s a big dip in energy during the hottest time of the day as your body is working hard to stay cool.

Great recommendations! Keeping hydrated is a big part of staying cool and healthy! Too many people feel that they have to stay at their house during a power outage. The truth of the matter is that your car probably has air conditioning. So, get in and zoom over to a place that has emergency power and an air conditioner.

Ok here’s a good one: Get a towel, soak it in water, wring it out a little and then put it around your neck. Gets a lot of cooling on dem dere arteries…… works better than you think :)

If I might —perhaps you should consider adding a few images. I don’t mean to disrespect what you’ve said ; its very enlightening, indeed. However, I think would respond to it more positively if they could be something tangible to your ideas
