Punny Poll #23: Do You Pick Up Pennies?

honest abe has fallen and he cant get up

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our guest writers by answering the last Punny Poll. Nearly half of you didn’t notice that we had guest writers; I guess those “by [SOMEONE WHO IS NOT NICK]” lines at the start of the guest articles didn’t help. Another 30% didn’t really like what they read. You may continue seeing a few guest articles here and there in the future, perhaps with extremely large pictures of my face with a red X across it so you know I didn’t write it.

The other day, I picked up a penny from the ground and thought to myself, “Awesome, I’m one cent richer!” What I didn’t consider at the time was that the single penny represented 0.0000001% of my net worth and that I had probably picked up more germs than wealth. Perhaps it’s in my best interest to never pick up pennies again and stick with nickels and above, but I could miss the opportunity to score hundreds of dollars in free change. So instead I’ll turn to you for guidance, like I always do with my big important money decisions.

How have your finances suffered due to bad weather in 2008?

I never met a penny I didn’t like.

Over the last 21 weeks of walking 4x a week near a major University I have found (and picked up):

329 pennies
23 dimes
16 nickels
4 quarters
2 dollar bills

1 silver dime
1 wheat penny
1 canadian penny (1952)

1 unsmoked joint
2 unopened cans of beer (bud and bud light)
6 working disposible lighters

1 cool zippo lighter
18” Sterling silver necklace with pendent
1 broken gold chain (~6 grams of 18K)
3 screwdrivers
1 small hammer
1 music CD in case
2 cell phone re-chargers
1 padlock with key
1 chain for locking up a bike
1 flashdrive
1 small magnetic picture frame
multiple pens
2 fast-food toys (a transformer & a bunny doll)
1 ball of twine (new)
various wood/metal screws, bolts, & nuts

So over time it adds up!

I always pick up pennies. And as randomperson demonstrates, if you’re looking, you can find lots of other good stuff, too! Sometimes when I am walking to work I carry a plastic bag and pick up recyclable things, too. It’s easy to drop them in the bin when I get there.

I always pick up pennies. Although I will admit I saw one in a puddle the other day and I left it for the next guy
