I've had a season to try out the push mower I mentioned above. It works quite well, and I definitely recommend it.

Oh, and I ended up going with a corded electric weed trimmer and leaf blower. Both do the job just fine for me.

I currently have a Snapper gas powered mower which is almost on it's last season. I hate the noise and I hate the polution as well. I will probably purchase a manual push mower after mowing season ends as prices will be cheaper. As it stands, you can get brand new push mowers for under $100.

Using a push mower may also mean making sure the ground is level by applying top soil and grass seed in early autumn. I don't mind the exercise, but a level yard will make it easier to push.

On the downside, a manual push mower may also be a paid if you have a big yard. In which case you may be better off getting a Black and Decker model gas mower.

You're lucky you had a push mower. We had a pair of hand shears and it was like cutting the grass with a huge pair of scissors!

When I was younger my Mom made me mow the lawn with a push mower. But I did have a gas-powered weed wacker. Congrats on mowing your lawn, since it was your first time ever...how long was your grass?

I bought a rechargeable trimmer for our old house, which was on 0.22 acres. I couldn't even trim a smallish lot like that on one charge. I returned it within two days and bought gas.

Now that we live on a little better than an acre, I can't even get an extension cord long enough to reach all over the place, so that's out for us.

GAS. Trust me.

Corded mowers are just weak (not fast enough for actually grown grass, like two weeks), dangerous (run over that cord and DIE), and all around lame.
I can't imagine a battery powered mower being even slightly better; probably way worse, despite what advertisements and bullet points on the box say.

Gas is mean, it's badass, it sounds like you're TAMING the lawn (as opposed to giving it a pedicure), and it flat out works.

Being the friend who loaned you his corded weed trimmer, I highly prefer gas powered equipment over electric. The cords get in the way for corded items and the batteries just aren't powerful enough on cordless items.

We got the corded weed trimmer as a gift from our father-in-law, and I recognize it was far cheaper than a gas trimmer. However, if I could go back to buy my own instead, I would go with the gas powered.

However, if you want to see the true power of a gas powered weed trimmer, ask our painter neighbor. He has one. Oh, and he has a pressure washer twice as powerful as mine. It would probably blow my whole hand off rather than just a finger like mine almost did.
