There’s been a lot of uncertainty about the number and quality of technology jobs that will be around in a few years for those entering college now. Much of this doubt is surrounded by economic and political factors, but the big cause Property Marbella

[...] I’m reporting to you live from the National Conference Center in Who The Heck Knows Where, Virginia. I’ve been sent here, along with 500 of my co-workers from around the world, to be trained in the methods of leadership. You see, mine is one of many companies that will be suffering from a severe shortage of technical leaders in coming years as the baby boomer generation begins to retire. But at least our company has had the foresight to start training the youngest generation to start assuming those critical leadership roles. [...]

What do you mean start? They already have! Europe has quietly been luring away the best US-educated scientists and engineers for the last decade (hmm, $35K as a post-doc in the states + uncertain job market, or $80K post-doc and professorship in pretty pretty Europe? Gee, I wonder)

The ONLY reason we are still OK technologically speaking is because of our highly-ranked universities...powered by foreign grad students. More talent is being lured away by lucrative offers overseas (did you hear about the US $1 billion Biopolis research haven that Singapore has built?). China is doing the same thing, and now it has more resources than ever to attract the best American-educated students.

Even if we concentrate on education now, as your company is doing, there's a whole generation that has been skipped. The gap in momentum (the intellectual momentum built up by other countries and the momentum lost by the US) is not easily closed, even in a generation or two. Wouldn't it be ironic if many manufacturing jobs started moving back to the US?

It's time to start learning Mandarin. (I'm ahead of you on that one ;-) ) Hindi would probably be useful too, but many educated Indians already speak the Queen's English. (whereas many Chinese people, even if they speak english, have terrible accents).

I think we're starting to head in the right direction with K-12 science education, though it's not the government that's spearheading the effort. And it's certainly not parents, either! It's the businesses that realize they're going to need today's grade schoolers to run tomorrow's computer systems. My company has increased youth science education funding dramatically in the last few years because they realize that nobody else is going to get these kids interested in science if they don't do it themselves. But you're absolutely right that the U.S. is in a sorry state for science right now, and that's going to be the #1 reason why other countries are going to start passing us by for technological supremacy.

Still, in order to really change things, we need better math, science, and computer science teachers to help build good foundations and spark interest. We also need parents to crack the whip to make sure their kids are less lazy...but that's unlikely to happen. (just look at how many toys they buy for their kids!)
