This is a great, informative post. I would expand the advice to cover not only what we normally consider as artworks, but antiques as well. In my area of specialty--vintage radios and phonographs--I see many people who pick up an old radio or record player at a flea market or yard sale, put work into restoring it and bringing it back to life, and in the process turn it into quite a valuable item, money-wise. Then they never get appropriate insurance for it, it gets stolen, and they can never recover its true full value. Sad -- and so unnecessary.

I was watching Antiques Road Show the other night and saw people who had picked up items at yard sales that turned out to be very valuable. My own collection consists of items which are important to me, but, I assumed, of little interest to anyone else. Now I'm not so sure. This is definitely something I'm going to call my insurance company about.

I'm so glad I came across this post! My wife and I picked up a piece of turn of the 20th century french painting at a thrift store for $25. We love it and have wanted to take it on Antiques Roadshow. I've thought about getting insurance for it and very well may do it now after reading this. Of course, we have to get it appraised, etc. But, if anything happens we know what it's worth. And, if we ever end up selling it we'll know what it's worth!

Very good advice! Shop around for a good home insurance policy and the savings you'll make buy finding the best deal will cover the extra cost of insuring your art collection.

I priced a few policies with art insurance-only companies, but they generally wanted $3+ per $1,000 or would only cover collections worth $50,000 or more. This is probably the best option for people with real collections.

I just tacked on a rider to my homeowners insurance for about $1 per $1,000. Before we owned a home, we had similarly priced coverage with our renter's insurance.

You're back from the dead!

I consider my body as art, but no one will insure me. Not sure why.

Are there companies who specialize in art insurance or do you just go through your homeowner's insurance?
