Bonds are not just loans to the government, there are all different types of bonds out there as well as bond mutual funds.  The US government's bonds (Treasuries) are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States and as a result, the yield/interest rate you receive is low in comparison.  Likewise, if you wanted to buy some bonds backed by the "full faith and credit" of general motors, well, you could get a nice yield, but you're also taking on more risk.</description>
