Eh. I just buy coin wrappers and wrap it myself. If your change is mostly pennies, the coin wrappers equal about a 10% fee (the bag of wrappers will wrap $24.00 in pennies for $2.50), so I would use coinstar if I had mostly pennies, but since I usually have a ton of nickels and dimes, the coin wrappers are worth it (A mixed bag of wrappers for $2.50 will roll $210.00, so that’s only a 1% “fee”).

I have a jar of change that hasn’t had any income for about five years, but I just haven’t gotten around to rolling it up yet. Once I find a CoinStar machine in working order, I’ll probably trade it in for Amazon gift certificates.

And if it wasn’t apparent from the article, this is probably illegal. I’ve already gotten four calls from people requesting I pay their bail. I told them I would as soon as they install CoinStar machines in their jails.

Dude, go to a Chevy Chase branch and they’ll count it for free even if you don’t have an account. It has to be a full service branch, no one of the places in supermarkets and stuff.

No wasted time counting and no potential jail time.

Nick isn’t stupid, he’s just misguided. He won’t “steel” anything because he’s not a metalworker.

Last time we used a Coinstar, it was to cash in our Swear Jar change so we could donate it more easily to charity. We chose to donate it to Red Cross directly from Coinstar, but the system was down so we could only cash it in. We still had to pay the fee though, so the charity we eventually donated to, Gabriel’s Project, got shafted by a few dollars.

What are you doing man?! You live within a stone’s throw of half a dozen Chevy Chase banks, I bet. Their machines are free. Dump the change, get a receipt, take it to the teller, and they hand over the cash. I tried it and it worked perfectly.

As for Chevy Chase, I’ve always thought he should stick to acting instead of getting into the banking business. But the next time I see him, I will try to toss my jar of coins at him.

This is all hilarious. I have to admit, I checked out the coinstar machine last time I was at the grocery store. Couldn’t see the modem plug, not to mention it was right beside the main cashier “cage” thing.

On the other hand, I’ve always wanted to be banned from somewhere…

How can you go to jail over something as serious as unplugging a cable? Sometimes cables accidentally fall out. Just accidentally drop a few pennies behind or around the machine as your counting change. As you reach around the machine to pickup your change from the floor, hope that your hand doesn’t mistakenly pull the data cable out.

There are better ways to get rid of your change. You can use a vending machine (and get CASH back) or self check out line. It will take you time but I have a vending machine at work and I can easily get rid of $10 per day in less than 5 min.

You should all grow some balls jesus christ. Your standards in life should never make you feel so high above everyone else that your somehow obligated to stop crime by telling people they shouldn’t have a right to their own money. These are corporations that make the banks not do this simple task for free anymore even if you belong to it because people at coinstar are making money off of what you are to just going to ignore as “chump change.” Don’t let our society charge us more than what we already have to even the smallest thing as chump change adds up giving us at least a say.
