pretend this is a discover card

If you have a Discover credit card which participates in the Get More program, you’re probably aware that Discover will periodically change what items earn 5% cash back. Up until July 1st, that item was gas and various automobile-related expenses. But through September, Discover will now give you 5% back on clothes and assorted home and office supplies at select stores. In addition, you can earn 5% back on your tuition bill! Here’s the full list of eligible stores:

Apparel

Gap
Kohl’s
Marshalls
T.J.Maxx
Famous Footwear

Office/Home

Dell
Office Depot
OfficeMax
Staples
Linens ‘n Things
Pier 1 Imports

Tuition

Classes from preschool to college

Five percent back on tuition? I think that’s a hot deal. Thanks to Discover, now college students will have money left over with which to buy real food this semester! (In related news, ramen noodle company stocks plunged 50% today…)

But how do they track whether it was an educational institution that you paid? Do they have a complete database? Are you going to have to submit your tuition bills?

Mike,

Anywhere you use your credit card, the merchant will provide a category of the purchase to the credit card issuer. Most restaurants tag their credit card transactions as “Restaurant” while I believe all educational institutions use a generic tag like “Education” or maybe something more specific like “Tuition.” I’ll let you know when I charge Tegan’s tuition for the semester. Either way, I’ll have to do no extra work on my part (except maybe find my Discover card ^_^).

Hmm, I wonder if I can prepay her tuition for the next couple of years…

Now the trick is to find a university that takes Discover, as mine doesn’t :/

Yeah, my alma mater doesn’t accept it either, I believe. But it looks like community colleges seem to accept it more often. I’ve yet to see any school take AMEX…
